C8 (octyl) bonded silica offers intermediate hydrophobicity between C18 and polar sorbents. It is particularly useful when analytes are too polar for adequate C18 retention, or when selectivity differences from C18 are needed. Lower silanol activity compared to C18 reduces tailing of basic compounds.

Applications: β-lactam antibiotics in milk, polar pesticides in water, mycotoxins in cereals, hormones in environmental water samples.
