Mixed-mode strong cation exchange (MCX) combines reversed-phase retention with strong cation exchange, enabling selective extraction of basic compounds (amines, basic drugs) with a simple two-step elution: non-polar interferences are washed away with methanol, then basic analytes are eluted with ammoniated methanol.

Applications: Basic drugs of abuse in urine and blood (amphetamines, opiates, benzodiazepines), basic veterinary drugs in animal tissue, basic pesticides (organophosphates, carbamates with amino groups).
